The Libella is a very ancient tool used for layouts and leveling. Mostly forgotten now in this day and age. Recently while making a version of the English Layout Square done by Popular Woodworking I was inspired by a fellow woodworker to add a string and plumb bob to the square, effectively creating what is known as a libella. I had a question on my blog as to its possible usefulness, and I thought that shooting a quick video might be the best way to go explaining the basics of this useful tool.

If you’ve officially gotten bitten by the woodworking bug, you’ll soon be in the market for some woodworking tools.
But what kind of woodworking tools and how many?
The answer to this will depend largely on things such as your budget, your style of woodworking, and the type of wood you’ll be working with.
Where you live and the space that you have available in which to work can also affect the style of woodworking that you ultimately go with. Where you live may constrict you as to the space you have available or the noise level toleration, so you may not be able to have and use the biggest and most powerful of woodworking tools. If this is the case, your style may be one of strictly working with hand woodworking tools.
If you are like most of us woodworkers, over time you’ll accumulate a variety of woodworking tools. You’ll have the large and powerful to the hand tools you bought when you were first starting out in woodworking.
The style of furniture that you are wanting to build is also an influencing factor when it comes to choosing the right tools for you. One style of furniture will more than likely require few different types of tools over another style. This is why it’s always a good idea to get yourself a good set of plans for the type of project you’re considering.
Today the amount of woodworking tools that you can buy is limited only by your ability to be able to afford to buy them.
But before you run off and bust the bank buying woodworking tools, consider that woodworking isn’t always about having the best tools. When you don’t have every tool available to help you overcome problems that arise, this can be a good thing as it will serve to develop not only your skills but your creative mindset as well.
Keep in mind that there are just about as many ways to accomplish something in woodworking as there are tools on the market. In fact, most of the time when you think you’re up against a limitation caused by your lack of tools… it’s your imagination and self skills that will come up with a workable solution if you just re-think the situation.
But, when the time comes and you begin thinking seriously about acquiring some additional woodworking tools, don’t be so quick as to rush out and get the latest shiny new object. Professional woodworking magazines are a great source of information and reviews, so take some time to see how some of the various models that you are considering have been graded.

Unique Woodworking Tool Hi! I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. I found yet another tool that not only would be great for the DYIs and the homeowners, but it will also be very useful for the professional. Lets get to work. Now, Ive already produced videos showing you how to use hand drive nails and also showing you how to use a nail gun. But there’s one thing that both of these have in common. And what that is, is a nail set. This is a traditional nail set kit that you use to see in most carpenters carry around. There’s an alternative to this for those of you who are hammer challenged and for tight places for the experts where you have to get in the really tight places where its hard to swing your hammer. Now, what I have here is a spring actuated nail set and punch. There’s no hammer required while using this and its very easy to use in tight places. Now, you’ve drove this nail and as far as you dare, you know and another couple of whacks, you’re going to starting to put this edge and this OG in jeopardy. Now is the time you get ahead and take your nail set, set it on there. Just take your time, just keep the little pressure towards the nail head and it drives it right down and right below the surface. Simply take your favorite spackle fill it in, ready to paint. A truly unique feature about this nail set unlike a conventional nail set. Although you may have room to get in here to drive a finish nail because its being adjacent to this corner. If you try to get a nail …

Woodworking is popular all over the world as both a profession and a pastime. There are a wide range of woodworking tools, however, when you’re first starting out you should only need a handful of them and you certainly don’t need to go out and spend loads of money.
The best advice anyone can give you is to start exposing buying only those tools you feel comfortable using and to add tools later on as you need them. Also, while it may be tempting to go for the cheaper tools, it’s the sturdier the tool is, the longer it will finally. So if you want to save money, check for tool sales or you can level buy them second hand. If it’s a good tool, it will often last for many years.
When it comes to woodworking tools, the basics include drill bits, hammers, hacksaws, levels, pliers, safety glasses, sandpaper, screwdrivers, tape measures and wrenches. Make sure you are familiar with how to use the tool, as well as what it’s used for, before you even pick it up. Being overly confident about a tool before you learn about it is a good way to get injured.
If you are a beginner woodworker, you should always start with delicate woods such as pine or spruce, as they are much easier to work with than harder woods. Once you become more comfortable, you tin then move on to more exotic woods like cherry or Baltic birch.
Once you become more experienced, you can move on to power tools. Circular saws, power drills, jigsaws, random orbital sanders, table saws and compound miter saws are excellent tools to work with if you wish to create more complex woodworking projects.
No matter what woodworking tooling you’re using, withal, you should always put safety foremost. You should always wear the proper safety equipment. Safety goggles, ear protection if you’re using power tools, and gloves are necessary so as to prevent injury.
You’ll also want to pay attention to the clothing you wear. Loose fitting clothing should be avoided and instead you should choose thicker materials such as denim. This will protect you from heat as well as flying wood chips. You should also refrain from wearing any jewelery that can get snagged by any of the tools you’re using.
Woodworking can be a lot of fun as long as you educate yourself on the proper procedures and you put safety first.
